Did you know...
T-Shirts were originally worn as undergarments and then became a military staple due to the comfort and coolness of them. There is a strong association between T-Shirts and sailors or Marines since these men would often be seen without their jackets and wearing only the undershirts. Use of the garment and popularity began to spread slowly among civilians as T-Shirts became standard day to day work wear for men, especially in industries requiring intense physical labor. Due to this the T-Shirt was associated with the working classes and was a very masculine item of apparel.
The popularity of T-shirts was to skyrocket, however, when the film A Streetcar Named Desire was released. The star of the film, Marlon Brando, was destined for international iconic status and his macho, confident role in the controversial film made many want to copy his look which included a white T-shirt. Although the impact of this wardrobe choice is lost on modern generations wearing a T-shirt with no jacket over the top was very showy and shocking for the time. The T-Shirt look carried over to Brando’s film “The Wild One” which married the white T-shirt up with jeans, a black leather jacket and a motorcycle. Popularity of this look spread among young people wishing to emulate the daring, rebellious and sexually appealing image of the outlaw bikers in the film. A couple of years later another rapidly emerging American icon, James Dean, wore white T-Shirts under his jackets in the film Rebel Without A Cause which further solidified the popularity and impact of the look.
* T-Shirt Fact * White is still the most popular color of shirt in the United States followed by black and then blue.
